Volunteers Needed for Open Streets Planning

Open Streets brings together citizens, community groups, and local businesses to temporarily close major thoroughfares to car traffic on a Sunday afternoon, and open them up for people walking, biking, skating, scootering, and playing.

Open Streets gives residents an opportunity to explore, celebrate, and re-think a city’s largest public space—its streets—in a safe, fun, and family-friendly way. And it encourages active transportation, outdoor physical activity, community engagement, and healthy living.

Paths for People is working with the City of Edmonton on a proposal to hold a series of Open Streets events in the summer of 2018 to be funded by the City but hosted by Paths for People. The final request for funding won’t happen until the fall, but we need to start planning now. And we need help.

Paths for People is seeking volunteers who are interested in helping plan and organize Edmonton’s first Open Streets series next year. We are looking for passionate advocates for active transportation and healthy living who are willing to donate some of their time over the next year.  In particular, we are in need of people with experience in event planning, sponsorship, promotion, volunteer organizing, and relationship-building with community partners. But such experience is not mandatory. General enthusiasm goes a long way too!
