Over summer and fall 2021, we reached out to candidates to understand what their vision for safer, more liveable streets is within our communities. We are sharing their responses on our website and social media to help you make an informed vote on October 18 (or sooner, if you choose to vote in advanced polls).

Ward Anirniq is located in northwest Edmonton, covering Inglewood to Griesbach to Albany.

Anirniq is pronounced “A-nirk-nik”. It is an Inuktun word that means “Breath of Life or Spirit.” You can find out more information here.

In Ward Anirniq, we had 3 out of 6 candidates respond to our survey. Below are their responses.

• If the Candidate does believe in a 15-Minute City, what are tangible ways they would work to implement this?(Maximum 150 characters). – I support a city where everyone can access what they need to live, play and enjoy their city within 15 minutes. We need to have a full range of transportation options for citizens. Public engagement with stakeholders would be essential to help shape a plan based on local knowledge as they know where is the best place to walk or bike in their area and we should use that wisdom. I would support developing the 15 minute districts with plans to address a wide range of transportation options and then create a plan to fund and implement these changes. Another area we often miss is the school commute. I would like to have school commute’s as part of the district plans with better infrastructure for children to walk / ride to school. Less yellow buses on our roads would improve road safety, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and encourage active transportation.
• What kinds of transportation projects does the Candidate think we should focus on integrating within the 2023-2026 Capital Budget Cycle? (Maximum 150 characters). – Priority based budgeting is important for the 2023-26 Capital Plan and that would need to include a city wide approach to ensure that every quadrant has a variety of infrastructure for citizens. The new Yellowhead Freeway Conversion and proposed LRT will provide additional options to add active transportation to the ward. Currently NW Edmonton does not have LRT access and has limited bike paths. Many folks I have talked to want to be able to bike to more places and don’t want to wait until after LRT arrives. I’d like us to address access sooner for folks than after the LRT arrives. Prioritized areas based on needs is important as have limited budgets. I’d like to suggest that we add bike and pedestrian infrastructure as part of new Yellowhead and future LRT development and that should be done first.

• If the Candidate does believe in a 15-Minute City, what are tangible ways they would work to implement this?(Maximum 150 characters). – Yes, I believe the future is about going hyper-local and I support the City Plan’s 15-minute City concept. The first key step is making sure the Zoning Bylaw Renewal is designed in a way that supports the City plan objectives. Secondly, to have a 15-minute City there needs to be vibrant local services within a short distance. Encouraging revitalization of business districts is another tangible step that supports mixed use development within communities.
